A living, people of God
The Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte has 272 parishes, near 1, 5 communities spread through the capital and more 27 other towns and small towns of the state. It counts on 650 priests, deacons and members of religious congregations. It has also a wide institutional structure, as follows:
• Ten sanctuaries.
• Episcopal Vicariates: Pastoral Action, Social and Political Action, Communication and Culture.
• Archdiocesan Seminary “Coração Eucarístico de Jesus” (Eucharistic Heart of Jesus)
• In education area: Santa Maria High School (seven units), Catholic University and a Center for high level study in the city of Juiz de Fora.
• Broadcasting and media area: Horizonte TV, Radios: “America” and “Cultura”. Opinião News. We have also Evangelization by means of the web and social networks.
• Culture: Archdiocesan Memorial; Museum of Religious Art. There is also a Center for Religious Promotion and Spreading of the Good News as well as Files and Inventory of the heritage.
• Health Care Facilities and Activities: Pastoral Healthcare, Pastoral Care for Aged People, among others. Our Lady of Lourdes Foundation Hospital, Foster House for Healthcare Our Lady of the Conception.
This is a wide and complex activity of a serving Church, supported by the work of priests, members of religious orders and congregations, laymen and women. Our Archbishop is Walmor Oliveira de Azevedo, his bishops auxiliaries are Joaquim Giovani Mol Guimarães, Luiz Gonzaga Fechio, Wilson Luís Angotti Filho and Justino de Medeiros Silva.
A Church committed with the youth
The Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte believes in the innovating strength of the youth. Therefore its works promotes happenings and encounters in cultural, spiritual and social fields so as appraise the protagonism of the youth.
Archdiocesan Youth Day
: it integrates the schedule of the Archdiocese since 2009, every Sunday of Palms. In 2012, thousands of youngsters left from the “Praça do Papa” (The Pope Square) to the Parish “Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem” (OUR Lady of Good Death). The happening has been full of joy and at his end there was a moving Eucharist celebration. See pictures
Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Piety.
Every August 15, Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady, thousands of youngsters of the Archdiocese climb up de “Serra da Piedade” (a mountain range in the Archdiocese), towards the Shrine of Our Lady of Piety. This is a gesture of love towards the Mother of Jesus, patroness of our State, under the title of Our Lady of Piety. This march gathers together each year more and more youngsters thirsty of the Love of Christ. The “2012” was the seventeenth edition of this pilgrimage. See photos 2011 Pilgrimage.
Episcopal Areas. The youth of the four Episcopal areas, in dynamism of faith promotes a series of encounters that are supported by the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte. These happenings mingle culture, prayer, sports, and praise. One example is the FESTJOVEM (A festival held in the Mangabeiras Park), futsal championship, youth congresses and meetings of the Youth Pastoral Care.
(Show up your Faith) in syntony with the Holy See and with the WYD, our youth received with great enthusiasm the pilgrim cross and the icon of Our Lady. In this very day, our Archbishop Mons. Walmor Oliveira de Azevedo blessed the cornerstone of the Christ King Cathedral. The lighting of the cross of the Cathedral had been open up in this occasion. See pictures.
under the coordination of the Episcopal Area Our Lady of Piety, this festival aims the integration of youngsters from the parishes of the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte. This is a happening composed by musical shows, sport and cultural activities and a vocation fair. See pictures of the festival 2012
Youth Eucharist Vigil: Once a month, the youngsters promote a night of prayers for the Mission Week and the WYD 2013.
Youth Archdiocesan Forum: Targets the spiritual growth of Young groups in parishes, new communities and movements, pondering about youth pastoral care in Brazil and the enthusiasm towards the World Youth Day.
Youth National Day: joyfully celebrated every last Sunday of October, the missionary month.
Currently, the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte joins all the (arch) dioceses all over Brazil to set the stage to the Mission Week, which will occur in the last week before the World Youth Day.
